Developing agriculture-based renewable energy, including bioenergy,
wind and solar, has the potential to boost farmer income, create jobs in rural
communities, diversify the nations energy markets, and protect the
environment. By utilizing the renewable resources on Americas farmland, we can
generate electricity, fuel our vehicles, and create a variety of products, all of which
can provide new revenue streams to farmers.
The Farm Security and Rural Development Act of 2002 (H.R. 2646/P.L.
107-171), signed into law May 2002, is the first Farm Bill to contain an energy
title. This legislation will help promote the development of ag-based renewables by
encouraging federal procurement of biobased products, providing grants and loans for
renewable energy projects, and funding vital research and development in bioenergy.
